CEO Perspective – Responsible AI

Let’s get the big news out of the way, shall we? 4o (o for omni) is here. It’s available for everyone for free, and it took the world by storm:

OpenAI is launching GPT-4o, an iteration of the GPT-4 model that powers its hallmark product, ChatGPT. The updated model “is much faster” and improves “capabilities across text, vision, and audio,” OpenAI CTO Mira Murati said in a livestream announcement on Monday. It’ll be free for all users, and paid users will continue to “have up to five times the capacity limits” of free users, Murati added. Kylie Robison

Well, it took the world by storm, but not without any controversies – the voice of Sky demo seems strangely resemble the one of Scarlett Johanson. The whole thing becomes even more weird by learning that OpenAI were refused rights to accesses voice:

The “Black Widow” actress issued a statement on Monday in which she said Altman re-upped his offer for her to officially lend her voice to his product after the Sky demo was already out. Instead, she had lawyers write to him demanding he explain the inspiration behind the AI voice. In the statement, she references the 2013 Spike Jonze movie “Her,” in which she voiced an AI named Samantha. Earlier on Monday, OpenAI issued a statement denying they had copied Johansson: “Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress,” though they agreed to take the demo down. You thought ChatGPT 4.o is great? Well, we’ll see if that’s the case in 12 months, as OpenAI exec believes that in a year, we will witness something even better in the AI landscape:

One OpenAI executive predicts generative AI tools like its own at the moment will be nothing compared to what’s to come.”In the next couple of 12 months, I think the systems that we use today will be laughably bad,” the ChatGPT maker’s COO Brad Lightcap said on a panel at the 27th annual Milken Institute Global Conference on Monday. “We think we’re going to move toward a world where they’re much more capable.”Lightcap says large language models, which people use to help do their jobs and meet their personal goals, will soon be able to take on “more complex work.”The COO, reached through OpenAI, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider before publication when asked to specify what he meant by so-called “complex work.” Aaron Mok

Back to the topic of controversies – Microsoft probably thought that the “Recall” feature would be met with enthusiasm rather than general pessimism regarding the safety of being recorded 24/7:

Microsoft has announced a new AI-powered feature for Windows 11 called ‘Recall,’ which records everything you do on your PC and lets you search through your historical activities. Recall works like a photographic memory for your PC, letting you access everything you’ve seen or done on your computer in an organized way using queries in your native language. With Recall, you can scroll through your timeline to find content from any app, website, or document you had opened. The feature utilizes snapshots to suggest actions based on what it recognizes, making it easy to return to specific emails in Outlook or the right chat in Teams. Mayank Parmar

Some moves are happening at the podium of the “Magnificent Seven” – as Nvidia, thanks to their AI ventures, will soon jump over Apple in terms of stock market value:

Nvidia could soon surpass Apple to become the world’s second-most valuable company, as the biggest beneficiary of the surge in adoption of AI applications takes on the iPhone maker that has been the largest Wall Street firm by market value for years. The reliance of virtually all artificial intelligence applications such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT on Nvidia’s (NVDA.O), opens new tab high-end chips has helped the stock nearly triple in value over the past year to $2.68 trillion.
