AI in Public Administration

ChatGPT Search is here, but is it a worthy opponent to the Google search engine juggernaut? This article puts the more traditional and familiar way of getting info from the web to the all-new and shiny AI-powered option by OpenAI:

“ChatGPT Search combines the chatbot’s excellent natural language understanding with a search engine for up-to-date information. If you’ve ever used Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat), you will feel right at home – the way they work is extremely similar, inline citations and everything. While OpenAI hasn’t revealed how it ranks online sources, the company’s VP of Engineering confirmed on Reddit that the feature relies on Bing to some extent. (…) AII-powered search engines do have their place. If the information you’re looking for isn’t too recent and requires an in-depth explanation, ChatGPT Search can indeed pull information from various sources to deliver a better response than Google. In two of the above examples, I preferred ChatGPT’s response as it delivered an answer quickly and at a glance. However, I still had to rely on my personal knowledge and experience to know that the responses were factually correct.

It’s not easy to establish ROI from AI projects. Here are some tips from CIOs to CIOs:

CIOs have been able to ride the AI hype cycle to bolster investment in their gen AI strategies, but the AI honeymoon may soon be over, as Gartner recently placed gen AI at the peak of inflated expectations, with the “trough of disillusionment” not far behind. That doesn’t mean investments will dry up overnight. According to AI at Warton’s report on navigating gen AI’s early years, 72% of enterprises predict gen AI budget growth over the next 12 months but slower increases over the next two to five years. That gives CIOs breathing room, but not unlimited tether, to prove the value of their gen AI investments.

It’s time to predict – as it is the end of the year, of course! Here are some predictions from Forbes:

As we step into 2025, the tech industry is on the brink of transformative shifts. Building on the lessons of 2024, the coming year promises advancements in Artificial Intelligence, a stronger focus on cybersecurity, and major changes in cloud computing, data center infrastructure, and the broader tech ecosystem. (…) 2025 will be a defining year for AI, shifting from generalized applications to enterprise-focused solutions. Businesses will refine their strategies to target specific use cases that deliver measurable results.

Are you sceptical about using AI in your life? Maybe following this “One Annoying Chore Test” methodology will help:

I recently had a breakthrough by talking to a computer while walking my dog. Creating a family meal plan had been on my to-do list for about a year and it had been gnawing at me. Writing out what everyone, including my 1-year-old, would eat at each meal for the next week and then figuring out what to get at the grocery store — it’s a real chore. So, dog leash in hand, I asked an AI assistant to do it for me. It took roughly three seconds, and I had the meal plan and the grocery list done. Some of the meals matched what we’d been doing, which is how I knew it was on point. Others were more creative than I expected, like giving our baby a bean salad. I somehow felt both productive and humbled. I also felt a little less burned out.
